THE LOCAL AREA
Scotland Island is the jewel of Pittwater, surrounded by sheltered bays, secluded beaches and pristine waterways.
Pittwater, famously described by Governor Phillip in 1788 as ‘the finest piece of water I ever saw’, is a stunning natural harbour that flows into Broken Bay, where the Hawkesbury River meets the Tasman Sea.
This is the traditional land the of the Garigal clan of the Guringai People.
To the north and west of the island is Ku -ring - Gai Chase National Park, with its many bush walks, waterholes, waterfalls, secret coves and caves, deserted beaches, indigenous heritage sites and abundant native flora and fauna.
Kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, possums, echidnas and many native birds such as kookaburras, cockatoos, galahs, currawongs, butcher birds, owls, lorikeets and lyre birds are regularly seen around the island and bays, as are seals, dolphins, fairy penguins, sea eagles, ospreys, pelicans, cormorants and gulls.
The National Park adjoins all the bays and other offshore residential areas in Pittwater, including Lovett Bay, Elvina Bay, Towlers Bay (also known as Morning Bay), the northern part of Mc Carrs Creek, Coasters Retreat, Mackerel Beach and the camping/holiday cabins of the Basin and Currawong Beach.
These are all home to offshore communities sharing the unique lifestyle of Scotland Island.
Scotland Island also has its own bushland reserve, Elizabeth Park, a 6.8 ha protected area the top of the island, which is a peaceful sanctuary full of bird calls, the perfect place for a bush walk and a picnic.
Marking the entrance to Pittwater are Barrenjoey Headland, with its iconic lighthouse and seal colony, and the protected nature reserve of Lion Island.
Pittwater is a boating paradise, offering unlimited leisure options for sailing and cruising, fishing, scuba diving, kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing and whale watching.
To the east and north east of the island are the affluent village suburbs of the Northern Beaches, with their iconic headlands, beautiful beaches, ocean pools and legendary surfing breaks.
Pittwater is truly a lifestyle paradise, and only a 40 minute drive from the city.
